Music At Metter Entertains With Bavarian Tunes

Larry Haller's 2-Star Final played German polkas, waltzes and American ballroom standards during the season kick-off of the Music At Metter concert series at Metter Park in Columbia. The next concert is June 22, when the San An Tones will play their selections of classic country songs.

 
Millers Sweep Lakers In Twin-Bill

Columbia Spruces Up During Recycling Day

Re-Enactors Converge In Rocher During Rendezvous

Despite the heat, 17th century re-enactors gathered in full dress uniform in Prairie du Rocher for the 38th annual Fort de Chartres Rendezvous. Thousands of attendees witnessed what life was like when the fort was occupied by various pre-Revolutionary war armies. Locals spotted in the crowd included George Hoerr, Joe Lepp, Andy Brinkmann and Columbia Alderman Jim Agne.

Recent Obituaries

Frieda M. Cottom, 91, of Columbia, died June 6, 2008 at Columbia Convalescent Center.  She was born May 15, 1917, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Charles and Lillian (Smith) Gough. She was married to the late Theodore R. Cottom, who died in 1981. Surviving are sons, Pete (Anna) Cottom and Larry Cottom, both of Columbia; grandchildren Diane (Albie) Shields of Columbia, Rick Cottom of Tallahassee, Fla., Sandra Cottom of Columbia, Kimberly Cottom of Cahokia and Michael (Angie) Cottom of Belleville; and great-grandchildren, Danielle Shields, Ana Shields, Kelsey Cottom, and Michael Cottom; along with other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thelmer Gough; and sisters Inez Robinson, Catherine Walker, Beneada Gough and Leona Gough. Visitation is Monday, June 9, 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral follows at 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Fr. Steve Gira, officiating. She will be buried at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund.

Winona Timmons, 82, died June 6, 2008. She was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Marceline, Mo., the daughter of the late Charles Riley and the late Rowena Davis. She married John Timmons Jr. in 1979 in Hesperia, Calif. He died in 1997. She is survived by sons James (Brenda) Knox of Dupo and George Knox of Columbia; daughters Sharon (Larry) Hosick of Columbia and Marsha Hansen of Mundelein; step-daughter Bonnie (Doug) Gerken of Holgat, Ohio; dear friend Rosella Hosick of Columbia; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; brothers Roy (Stephanie) Riley of Wesley Chapel, Fla. and Bob (Dottie) Riley of Booneville, Ark., (Richard) Wilcox of Booneville, Ark; and her friends at the Valmeyer Senior Complex. Mrs. Timmons was preceded in death by and an infant daughter, Betty Jo Knox, and 8 brothers and sisters. Visitation is Friday, June 13, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. A memorial will follow with Pastor Jonathan Peters officiating. She will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
