Fire Damages Roof Of New High School An early morning fire damaged a section of the roof of the under-construction Waterloo High School on South Market Street. The building affected was the future home of the industrial arts classrooms and the shipping and receiving facilities. “Damage was limited to the roof,” said Waterloo Fire Chief Mark Yeager. Waterloo Deputy Police Chief Mike Douglas noticed the fire at 4:30 a.m. while patrolling the south end of Waterloo. Firefighters were on the seen within minutes and began pouring water onto the roof. The blaze was under control in about 15 minutes. Firefighters stayed on the scene until 5:20 a.m. to make sure the area was secured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. “We have an idea as to how the fire started, but I would not like to speculate at this time,” Yeager said. Yeager, Mayor Tom Smith and School Superintendent Jim Helton were scheduled to meet later this morning to discuss the situation.
