The Fort de Chartres Ivy Landing Levee District repaired a sand boil discovered Sunday evening along a levee near at the Nevois locks south of the fort in rural Prairie du Rocher. A load of sand was delivered and volunteers from the village were called to fill and carry sand bags.

“When the word went out, several able-bodied young men and women quickly arrived to help out,” said Judy Krebel, a resident of rural Prairie du Rocher.

“With the help of Roger's Redi Mix and a lot of volunteers we were able to build a ring levee around the boil and contain it,” said Levee District Commissioner Mark Laurent, who added the levee remains strong.

The National Weather Service is predicting the Mississippi River is expected to crest at 37.3 feet on Wednesday and then gradually lowering.

The sand boil next to a levee near Fort de Chartres was capped with a ring levee Sunday afternoon.

Locals On National TV: With all the flood issues along the Mississippi River, national television stations ABC News and CNN visited Valmeyer last week to talk to locals about the Flood of ’93 and the following relocation of the town to the top of the bluff. Those interviewed included Eric Seidler, Dennis Knobloch, Mayor Howard Heavner and Jean Langsdorf.

Joe Link of Columbia continues to recover from injuries sustained in a fall on Friday. His family reports he is regaining some feeling to his arms and legs.

Harvest Time: All three Monroe County Commissioners have been busy this week harvesting their wheat crops.  “Despite the heavy spring rains, yields are pretty good for me,” said Commissioner Dale Haudrich of Hecker.

Sarah and Doug Sparwassser became the parents of their first child on Monday. Ryland Mac Sparwasser weighed in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces and was 22 ½ inches long. Mom and the baby are doing well, and Doug decided to take the rest of the week off from his job at the City of Columbia.

Kristine Voelker gave birth to her second child last week, son Ripken Voelker. Her husband, Christopher, and daughter, Markee, are helping out around their Maeystown residence to welcome the baby home.
