A sand boil is
patched at Roger Schaefer’s farm in rural Columbia. Skid-loader operator Derek
Huebner, left, pushes rock into position under the guidance of members of the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as property owner Roger Schaefer, third from right,
looks on.
Work
continues to patch the sand boils that have surfaced today
at a levee along the bottoms
in rural Monroe County. About 10 sand boils have been located today along a
47-foot agricultural levee protecting mainly farm land between Carr Creek and
Fountain Creek. This is a sparsely populated area several miles to the south and
west of Columbia.
The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers are working with the Monroe County Highway Department to
contain the sand boils. They are concentrating their efforts at a boil located
near the Roger Schaefer Farm on Taake Road. At that site, they have poured
several tons of rock around the boil and are preparing to encircle the area with
sand bags later this afternoon. There is sufficient man-power at the scene, and
volunteers are not being requested. Deputies from the Monroe County Sherriff’s
Department are at the scene preventing unauthorized vehicles from entering the
area.
Local officials
do not believe there is any danger of the levee failing and nearby residents are
not being evacuated. |
