Deputy Rescues Man From Car Submerged In Pond

Zachary Altman’s car was pulled from a pond along the Maeystown Road following an accident.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Bob Dickerson came to the rescue of a man who was trapped inside of his vehicle lying upside down in a Wartburg pond following a July 14 accident. Zachary Altman of Dupo is recovering at St. Louis University Hospital from injuries sustained in the accident. He was underwater for a several minutes, but was pulled to safety by Dickerson.

Monroe County Ambulance personnel were able to get Altman breathing and treated him with first aid until an Arch helicopter landed nearby. He was  flown to St. Louis University’s emergency department.

According to the police report, Altman, 24, was driving a Lexus southbound on Maeystown Road After passing JJ Road at 1:30 a.m., he lost control of the vehicle and it slid down an embankment. The car rolled into a pond next to Dale Poetker’s home and landed on its roof. Deputy Dickerson was in a squad car in the area and was at the scene within moments. He ran down the hill and waded in waist-deep water to the car. Dickerson was able to open the driver’s side door and pull Altman out. At that point, Waterloo firefighter Andrew Glessner arrived and assisted in pulling Altman safely to shore.

Although he was under water for a couple minutes, Altman began to cough and show signs of life. Steve Wheat of Wheat's Towing then hooked the back of the car to a tow truck and quickly pulled it out, but there were no other individuals inside. Altman was ticketed for operating an uninsured vehicle and is being investigated for a possible charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
