Wednesday Night Fair Attendees Handed Memorable Evening

Thursday is a free entry night at fair sponsored by Harrisonville Telephone Company. It is also an armband day for children’s carnival rides. Activities kick off with a performance by the Bud Light Brigade from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Popular St. Louis-based oldies musical group Sh Boom will take the stage in the main arena at 8 p.m. Other activities include the 4H and FFA market animal auction beginning at 6 p.m. The senior class horse show starts at 6 p.m. in the horse arena.

 

Brian Landgraf of Columbia will be offering helicopter rides over Waterloo Thursday evening. He will be taking off from the fairground’s east parking lot.  

“It was an awesome ride and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to see the sights of Waterloo from high in the sky,” said Fair Queen Carolyn Wicklein.

Justin Hock, 20, of New Athens was identified as the man who died early Wednesday morning in a car accident along Floraville Road, according to 550 AM KTRS. Hock lost control of his Chevy Camero in the 4900 block of Floraville and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Columbia Historical Society World War II Show and Tell: The Columbia Historical Society will hold a showcase of 1940s and World War II memorabilia on Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Columbia Public Library basement. Members and guests may bring items for showing this one evening, and Dave Eckert will be on hand with his extensive collection.

 

Recent Obituaries

Eleanor Althoff nee Engel, 91, of Valmeyer, died July 23, 2008 in Red Bud. She was born Aug. 16, 1916 in Merrimac, the daughter of the late Jacob and Louisa (nee Foster) Engel. She was married to the late Wesley Althoff. Mrs. Althoff is survived by her children, Charlotte (Tom) Gartzke of Valmeyer and Ray Althoff of St. Louis, Mo. Grandchildren Tom (Tracy) Gartzke, Julie (Mike) Nappier, Carrie (Bo) Brewer, Katie (Chris) Althoff-Moore and Nicholas Althoff; great-grandchildren Caitlin, Grace, Mark, Hunter, Ellie, Aidan, Spenser and Sydney; and sister-in-law Darlyn Kohnz; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Valmeyer; St. Anne's Altar Sodality, a 62-year member of the Valmeyer American Legion Auxiliary Post 901 and Valmeyer Senior Citizens. Memorials may be made to Masses or St. Mary's Church Building Fund. Visitation is Friday, July 25, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. The Valmeyer American Legion Auxiliary service is at 7 p.m. Funeral is Saturday, July 26, 10 a.m., at St. Mary Catholic Church in Valmeyer with Father Urban Osuji officiating. She will be buried at St. John UCC Cemetery in Valmeyer.
