County Fair Concludes With FFA Fun Night

A tractor trailer from Renner Stock Farms of Belleville accidently took down a low-hanging power line Saturday morning on Gardner Street in Waterloo. Two utility poles were tore down causing electric to be out in the area for a couple hours. The truck was carrying horses and was en route to the fairgrounds for an equestrian competition.

 

The Monroe County Floodplain Mapping Open House is Tuesday, July 29, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Monroe County Annex in Waterloo. Maps of FEMA’s proposed new floodplain along the bottoms will be available for viewing.

 

Maeystown’s annual Trash and Treasures village yard sale is Saturday, Aug. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Residents will sell their treasures on tables set up in front of homes and businesses throughout the village. A map to the various sale locations will be available at the Maeystown General Store on the day of the sale.
 

FEMA’s New Floodplain Maps Now Available Online

Leading the discussion were members of FEMA, East-West Gateway Council of Governments and the Illinois State Water Survey. The maps are available at www.illinoisfloodmaps.org.

 

Recent Obituaries

Leland H. Johanning,
64, of Waterloo died July 27, 2008.  He was the husband of Rejona Johanning, nee Everding. Mr. Johanning was born June 16, 1944 in Belleville the son of the late Theodore F. and Anna Johanning, nee Buettner. Besides his wife, he is survived by two children, Darren (Colleen) Johanning and Leanna (Shane) Stechmesser; three grandchildren, Lydia and Nathan Johanning and Olivia Stechmesser; two brothers, Marvin (Ruth) Johanning and Milford (Jeanette) Johanning; a sister-in-law, Jane (David) Marler and a brother-in-law, Curtis (Kay) Everding, Sr.; mother-in-law Linda Everding; along with  nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Johanning was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Warburg, the Holy Cross Cemetery Board, the Waterloo FFA Alumni and the Monroe County Farm Bureau. Visitation is Tuesday, July 29, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo. Funeral is Wednesday, July 30, 10 a.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg, Pastor Stuart Rethwisch officiating. He will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund or Building Fund.

Arlene May Tomlinson, 89, of Waterloo, formerly of Halls, Tenn., died July 26 in Red Bud. She is survived by a sister of Martha (Jim) Barbee of Waterloo. She is also survived by nieces nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin brother Alan Tomlinson, brother Bernard Tomlinson and a sister Hellen Ferguson. Mrs. Tomlinson was born Sept. 3, 1918 in Halls, Tenn. the daughter of the late Hugh D. and Hattie Tomlinson, nee Carney. There was no visitation with a private burial. DeFabio Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
