Row Appointed New Waterloo Building Inspector

Waterloo Mayor Tom Smith, right, and the Waterloo City Council appointed Russ Row Jr., as the city’s new building inspector and ordinance code administrator. The position was recently created by the city while Alderman Vicki Koerber and the ordinance committee updated the city’s property code. Among his many duties, Row will be responsible for inspecting residential rental property. Per the new code, landlords will be required to pay $75 for an inspection when the occupant changes. Prior to a new tenant moving in, Row must verify the unit complies with the updating property codes.

 

JV Bulldogs Fall To Jerseyville

Playing in their first tournament since starting the tennis program last year, the Gibault Catholic High School girls’ tennis team finished in sixth place out of 10 teams Sept. 20 in the St. Anthony’s Small Schools Tournament in Effingham. Leading the Hawks were Jennifer Lesko, fourth place in first singles; Danielle Spezia, fifth place in second singles; and the doubles team of Paige Buchheit and Sam Naumann finished in sixth place.

“I couldn’t be happier with their effort,” said Coach Alan Lesko.

 

Maryville University freshman midfielder Erik Roediger of Columbia has been named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 22. CHS graduate Roediger scored in both Saints victories last week. He recorded his first collegiate goal in Maryville's 4-0 victory against MacMurray College. He has played in every game this season and added one goal in the Saints 6-0 win over Eureka College. These two wins gave Maryville its third and fourth shutout victories of the season respectively. The Saints are now 4-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

 

Columbia Firefighters Display Their New Truck At Festifall

The Columbia Volunteer Fire Department’s new hook and ladder truck was on display Sunday during the annual Festifall at A.C. Metter Memorial Park. Bingo Only This Friday At VFW: Due to a malfunction in a utility system, there will not be a fish fry this Friday, Sept. 26, at the Waterloo VFW. “But we’ll still have bingo upstairs,” said VFW Post Commander Stephanie Kirksey.

 

Recent Obituary

David Patrick Sr., 62, of Hecker, died Sept. 18, 2008, in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Aug. 29, 1946 in East St. Louis, the son of the late John and Mary E (nee Fortman) Patrick. Mr. Patrick is survived by his wife, Margaret Patrick nee Tucker; children David (Sarah) Patrick, John Patrick, Dawn (Troy) Patrick, Rhonda (Darryl) Disney, Donald Newcombe, Tammy (Vern) Gobin and Rodney (Ashley) Newcombe; grandchildren Amber Disney, Christina (Bob) Scarbrough, Tim Zirkelbach, Joey Zirkelbach, Alecia Zerkelbach, Via Patrick, Brooke Newcombe, Ashley Newcombe, Macey Newcombe, Cierra Patrick, Camdon Patrick, Raylee Patrick, Reid Patrick and David Patrick III; great-grandchildren Zane Merritt, Breanna Zirkelbach, Bailey Zirkelbach, Jax Scarbrough, Brayden Zirkelbach, Ethan Zirkelbach and Klarissa Zirkelbach; and nieces Jodi Miller and family and Dana Byrd and family; sister-in-law, Jo Patrick; along with cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother Dan Patrick; infant brother, John Patrick; and a daughter, Tina Newcombe. Mr. Patrick retired from Wolfmeier Trucking Co. in Millstadt and was formerly employed at Terminal Railroad in East St. Louis. He was a member of the Hecker Commercial Club and a former member of the Hecker Sportsman's Club. Visitation is Sunday, 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the Hecker Community Center. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m., Pastor Dennis Jones officiating. Memorials may be made to the Dove House Children’s Abuse Center.
