Waterloo Easily Slides By Salem In Soccer Regional

The Waterloo High school girls’ soccer team put 10 unanswered goals in the back of the net on the way to 10-0 shellacking of Salem on Monday night in a first-round game of the Class 2A Mascoutah Regional. Waterloo will play the winner of the Mascoutah / Centralia match on Friday.

High School Baseball Playoffs Underway: Gibault High School’s baseball season ended Monday night with a 9-8 extra-innings defeat to Freeburg (15-8) in the opening game of the Class 2A Columbia Regional. Host team Columbia (20-4) will take on Freeburg on Wednesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. Red Bud (11-14) will play Wesclin (17-8) on Thursday. The championship game is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. The Waterloo Bulldogs begin their playoff run Thursday, May 28. They will play Mascoutah in the Class 3A Althoff Regional in Belleville.

 

Morland Drive Headlines At Millstadt Maifest

Up and coming rock band Morland Drive
of Columbia took center stage Saturday during the Millstadt Maifest. Proceeds from the annual festival benefit the various parks in the village.

 

There will be four performances this June of Hail Columbia 2, an original play depicting the history of Columbia in a humorous light. More than 80 local actors from the community will take part in the extravaganza. The event, presented by Columbia’s Celebration 2009 Committee, will be Thursday, June 11, Friday, June 12, Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, at the Columbia Middle School. The original “Hail Columbia” pageant was presented during the 1959 Columbia Centennial Celebration. Advance tickets will be on sale at Ron’s Pharmacy and The Market Place beginning Friday, May 22. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (age 12 and under). Seating for each performance is limited to 350 people.

Bob Scheibe and Carl Vogt were recognized Monday by the Monroe County Commissioners on their retirement as Road District commissioners. Each did the roadwork in their districts for the past 16 years.

Ron and Rusty Candler of rural Prairie du Rocher are getting ready for their next Mud Race. It is scheduled for May 30.

Edward and Leanne Rahe announce the birth of a son. Erik Abraham Rahe was born Monday, May 18, 2009, at 6:30 p.m., at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and was 21˝ inches long. Paternal grandparents are Henry and Belle Rahe of rural Columbia. Maternal grandparents are Gary and Dee Meadows of Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Local rockers The Dirty River Band will play at Waterstreet in Evansville on Saturday, May 23, from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

George Weber Chevrolet will acution brand new Cameros at all four of their locations on Wednesday, May 20. Locally, the auction at the Columbia dealership begins at 6 p.m., and the one in Waterloo starts at 7 p.m. Bidders must be pre-registered by stopping by the dealership or logging onto www.weberchevrolet.com. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the USO.
