Figure
8 Provides Thrills And Spills
The grandstands at the Monroe County Fairgrounds
were packed Friday night for the always-popular Figure 8 Race during the annual
county fair. The cars sped around the looped-track to make their laps on the way
to the finish line.
The drivers thrilled the crowd with several big collisions and rollovers, which
brought standing ovations once the drivers gave the thumbs up that they were
uninjured.
One of the highlights occurred in the final championship heat when Leroy Reitz
rolled his car at one of the turns. With smoke and steam rolling out of the
upside down car, Leroy crawled out of the passenger side. He urged the firemen
to help him push the car back on its wheels and he soon hopped back in and
revved the engine. But to his disappointment, the crash killed the engine and
failed to re-start.

Firefighters work quickly to help Leroy Reitz
out of his car after it overturned during the Figure 8 Race.
