William McMillen of Waterloo and Ian Jones of Smithton were the drivers of the vehicles involved in the head-on collision yesterday in rural Waterloo. According to the police report, McMillen, 18, was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix eastbound on Country Club Lane with passengers Trevor Burgess and Dalton Hoff. The car went over the center of the roadway at the crest of a hill and into the path of a Ford truck driven by Jones, 18. After everyone safely exited the vehicles, the Grand Prix burst into flames. The Waterloo Fire Department soon arrived and extinguished the fire. Monroe County Ambulance Service personnel treated the victims for minor injuries, but no one was taken to the hospital.

The Waterloo High School girls’ varsity golf team is off to a successful start to their fall season. The Bulldogs, coached by Dave Stites, has a record of 12-3. In a recent home match, they defeated Mascoutah and Okawville. The low medalist was WHS’s standout Amy Faus with a 40. Other Bulldogs scores were Catherine Hawn, 43, Jenny Faus, 46, Andrea Wolfe, 47, Hayley Bode, 51, Maddy Munsel, 55, and Abbie Whitehead, 57. Waterloo and Columbia hooked up Tuesday at Annbriar with the Bulldogs coming out on top 183 to 213. Waterloo was led by a pair of 43s from Amy Faus and Catherine Hawn. The other WHS scores were Maddy Munsel, 48, Hayley Bode, 49, Jenny Faus, 50, Andrea Wolfe, 52, Beth Klein, 55, and Jessica Reifschneider 56. Friday Night Football: Waterloo at Carbondale Dupo at Columbia Carlyle at Red Bud German Quest At Waterloo Library: Those wishing to learn more about the home country are invited to attend the German Quest program Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo. Author and historian Gerald Perschbacher will share his insights on his historical and genealogical research from his visits to Germany. Perschbacher has written 15 book and more than 10,000 articles published on a variety of subjects, including history and religion. He is employed as the newspaper editor of the Lutheran Layman. The program is free and open to the public. Free Car Seat Check This Saturday: The Monroe County Ambulance Service will conduct a free child safety seat check on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The event will take place at the County Ambulance Garage located at 901 Illinois Ave. in Waterloo (the Monroe County Annex). As part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, certified technicians will provide on-site child safety seat inspections. Illinois law required children through age 8 be in a car seat when riding in a vehicle. “We urge everyone to get their child safety seats inspected. When it comes to the safety of a child, there is no room for mistakes,” said Monroe County Ambulance Service Director Carla Heise,
Punt, Pass And Kick: Waterloo High School’s Athletic Booster Club’s 13th annual NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick competition is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12. The competition tests distance, accuracy and skill in punting, passing and kicking a football. Free registration is from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., for boys and girls ages 8 to 15 (birth or baptismal certificate required). It will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the old Waterloo High School football / baseball field. All participants will receive an authentic Punt, Pass and Kick certificate. Students on an Illinois high school football team are not eligible to participate. No football shoes, cleats or turf shoes permitted; only soft-soled sneakers allowed. Four boy and four girl winners will be awarded a trophy and advance to the Waterloo Sectional competition on Saturday, Oct. 24. Recent Obituaries Leonard Schultz, 88, of Waterloo, formerly of Belleville and Freeburg, died Sept. 8, 2009. He was born May 10, 1921 in Tuscola, the son of the late Claus Henry and Anna (nee Ernst) Schultz. Mr. Schultz is survived by his children Anne DeToy, Paul (MarySue) Schultz, Jane (Mike) Quernheim, John Schultz and Mary (John) Wisniewski; a brother, John Schultz; sister, Leona Hughes; former wife, Joan Schultz; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Schultz; great-granddaughter, Kaylin Giddens; brothers Henry and Ernest Schultz; and sisters Pauline Hardy, Lillian Keeney and Juanita Benson. Mr. Schultz served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired as an engineer/cameraman for KMOV-TV in St. Louis. He was a member of IBEW, Loners on Wheels and Escapees Inc. Visitation is Friday, Sept. 11, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating. Mr. Schultz will be buried at Green Mount Cemetery in Belleville. Memorials may be made to the Oak Hill Alzheimer's Unit, the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Duane Baum, 77, of Waterloo, died Sept. 11, 2009, in Des Peres, Mo. He was born Nov. 23, 1931 in Monroe City. Funeral arrangements are pending at Quernheim Funeral Home. Johnnie Capron, 82, of LaGrange, a former Waterloo High School teacher and coach in the 1950s and 1960s, died Sept. 11, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Ida Mae (nee Limestall) Capron; children Debra (Joe) George, Donna (Fred) Kittleman and Diane (Ben) Marasa; grandchildren Jessica (Dan) O'Neall, Jason Diederich, John (Andrea) George, Daniel George, Michael George, Sarah George, Rachel George, Antoinette Dentamaro and Victoria Dentamaro; along with five great-grandchildren. Visitation is Monday, Sept. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Stickney, IL (708) 749-2033. A memorial service will follow.
