Scouts Begin Fundraising Drive For Flag At YMCA

Local scouts have started a fundraising drive to fund the purchase of a 30-foot flag pole to be installed in the front of the Monroe County YMCA. To kick off their effort, Cub Scout Pack 318 and Boy Scout Troop 320 held a barbecue Oct. 24 at the Ace Hardware parking lot in downtown Columbia. After counting up their earnings from that barbecue, the scouts figured they need to raise another $1,500.

“Both the scouts and the YMCA promote strong kids, strong families and strong communities. These two organizations are building stronger youth as a key to building  a more conscientious, responsible and productive society,” said Webelos Assistant Leader Jeff Lung. “So, we thought doing this for the YMCA was a perfect fit.”

Once the funds are generated and the pole is raised at the YMCA, the scouts will conduct a dedication ceremony. At that event, an American flag flown over Baghdad, Iraq and the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., will be placed atop the flag pole at the YMCA. The flag was acquired from Congressman Jerry Costello. Those who were unable to make it by the barbecue, but would like to help the scouts raise funds for the flag pole can send an email to Jeff Lung at jclung@charter.net.
