Columbia Wins Regional Title With Victory Over Gibault

The Columbia High School volleyball team defeated Gibault in two sets Saturday night to win the Class 2A Red Bud Regional. Gibault had beaten Columbia in their previous match-up this season. The Eagles advance to the sectional tournament at their home gym beginning next week.

Pirates Win Regional Championship: Valmeyer defeated New Athens in two sets on Saturday, 25-13 and 25-14, to win the Class 1A Valmeyer Regional. The Pirates advance to sectional play in Lebanon on Nov. 3.

Musketeers Win Playoff Football Game: Red Bud traveled to Chester on Saturday and won their first round playoff game over the Yellow Jackets. The Musketeers dominated the entire game and took home a 40-16 victory. Starring on offence for Red Bud were quarterback Jake Hoffman and wide receiver Mitchell Cleveland. Hoffman threw for 375 yards and had 97 rushing. Cleveland had more than 200 yards receiving. Late in the fourth quarter, Red Bud star running back, sophomore Tyler Hubert, injured his knee and was taken out of the game. His status for next week is not yet known. Next Saturday, Red Bud (8-2) will host Casey-Westfield, who beat Marquette High School 42-7. Casey is located in east-central Illinois along I-70 between Effingham and Terre Haute, Ind. It has been a relatively quiet Halloween night throughout Monroe County, but the County Deputies did interrupt a party in rural Wartburg… causing several attendees to quickly leave either by car or on foot.

 

Recent Obituaries

Eugene “Hoagy” Hohnbaum, 77, of Waterloo, died Oct. 30, 2009, at his residence. He was born Aug. 4, 1932, in Wartburg, the son of the late Arthur and Eleanora (nee Bode) Hohnbaum. Mr. Hohnbaum is survived by his wife, Lillian (nee Hesterberg) Hohnbaum; a daughter, Dr. Laurel (Kevin) Yeager; grandchildren Madison and Olivia Yeager; step-grandchildren Kyle and Kara Yeager; nephew, Larry (Cheryl) Hohnbaum; sisters-in-law Alberta Hohnbaum, Laverne Hesterberg and Doris (Willard) Meister; and a brother-in-law, Ray (Shirley) Hesterberg; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by brothers Laurence and Ray Hohnbaum. Mr. Hohnbaum was a veteran of the United States Navy. He owned Gene’s Barbershop in downtown Waterloo for 47 years before his retirement. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg, Waterloo VFW Post 6504, Waterloo American Legion and Waterloo Sister Cities Portaloo. Visitation is Monday, Nov. 2, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral service is Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg with Pastor Stuart Rethwisch officiating. Mr. Hohnbaum will be buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Memorial Fund.

Wyman W. Melching, 88, of Waterloo, died Oct. 30, 2009. He was born Jan. 17, 1921 in St. Joe, the son of the late Henry and Anna (nee Lange) Melching. Mr. Melching is survived by his children Wayne (Karen) Melching, Stanley (Tyana) Melching and Glenn (Sharon) Melching; grandchildren Raymond (Jennifer) Melching, John Melching, Troy (Kim) Melching, Michelle (Andy) Urke and Taylor Melching; great-grandchildren Kaylee, Raelyn, Chloe, Jordan, Bryce, Hannah, Jonathan and  Baylyn; and a sister, Ardell Huebner; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Melching and special friend, Lelia Garner. Mr. Melching was a member of Zion UCC of St. Joe, the Monroe County Farm Bureau and was a former singer with the Kaskaskia Trail Chorus. Visitation is Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral service is Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m., at Zion UCC of St. Joe with Pastor Nancy Spier officiating. Mr. Melching will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church.
