Weekend Wrap-Up - November 22, 2009
There was a
big turnout Saturday night for the annual Harvest Night
at the Hecker
Community Center. The event raises funds for the Monroe County office of the
University of Illinois Extension. Some of the big prize winners were Monie
Eschmann and June Valentine, who won the $500 prize raffle; and Kim Strellis and
Bethany Dell, who were the top bidders for a trip to Springfield to be pages for
the day for Rep. Dan Reitz at the state capitol.
Thousands of
deer were harvested this weekend throughout Illinois
as the
first firearm season kicked off. Exact numbers have not yet been released by the
Illinois Department of Natural Resources. As of Sunday afternoon, Billie Ziebold
was atop the leader board at the Red Bud Deerfest. His 24-point buck weighed in
at 218 pounds.
Area scouts went door to door Saturday collecting groceries for their annual Scouting For Food drive. The donations were given to the area food pantries in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Initial reports are that Waterloo packs 318, 323 and 301 collected more than 10,000 items which were donated to the Western Egyptian and Hope Christian Church food pantries. Scouts in Valmeyer and Columbia also participated.
The Waterloo Bulldogs Fell to Madison 70-32
on Saturday in the
championship game of Dupo’s Cat Classic Tournament.
In their season opener Friday, the Gibault High School boys’ bowling team defeated Columbia. While the Eagles came out strong and handily won the first game, the Hawks were able to pull away and take the next two.
Pvt. Dugan Hoffmann recently graduated from basic training at Marine Corp Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif. He is the son of Bill and Cathy Hoffmann of Goodyear, Ariz., formerly of Waterloo.
Volunteers are needed to help clean up the old Shoemaker Schoolhouse on the south end of Columbia in time for it to be on display during the town’s Christmas House Tour. Those wishing to pitch in during an upcoming weekend, can call Kathleen Habermehl at 281-4613.
