Columbia First Graders Perform Yankee Doodle Christmas: First graders at Parkview Elementary gathered Dec. 16 at the CMS cafetorium to perform the holiday musical “Yankee Doodle's Dandy Christmas.”  It was conducted by Parkview Music Teacher, Ms. Newell. The setting was Christmas Eve, 1776, in the colonial days of the United States. It appears Yankee Doodle is suffering from a toothache causing him to lose his Christmas spirit. With the help of the Christmas Team Spirit, he awakes to the true meaning of the holiday. Musical numbers included Welcome to America, Yankee Doodle Has A Toothache, The Yuletide Blues, The Christmas Spirit Lives Right Here and Merry Christmas To You From the Red, White and Blue.

SS. Peter and Paul Grade School students (in red) celebrate winning the first-ever Funderwear Game competition against the students of Immaculate Conception. The Falcons and Crusaders were able to collect nearly 4,700 items to be donated to the Daystar organization in Cairo, IL.

Gibault Falls To Cahokia In Candy Cane Classic

The Gibault Hawks varsity girls basketball team played very well last weekend in the Candy Cane Classic, which the school hosts. The Hawks made it to the championship game, but were defeated by Cahokia.

Columbia Defeats Freeburg On Hard Court

Harvick Visits Fans In Columbia: NASCAR Race fans lined up today with die cast cars, hats, t-shirts and photos in hand to get them autographed by Kevin Harvick at George Weber Chevrolet’s Columbia facility.

 

Emily Cox of Red Bud was injured Dec. 16 when the Mitsubishi she was driving rolled and landed on its roof near the Hallmark store in the Columbia Marketplace Center. According to the police report, Cox, 24, was traveling eastbound in the parking lot passing Tequila’s and Hallmark when she failed to yield to a southbound Chevy truck driven by Bradley Erb, 17, of Waterloo. The collision caused Cox’s vehicle to overturn entrapping her inside. Columbia firefighters assisted Columbia EMTs in extricating Cox. She was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Cox was ticketed for DUI, driving on a suspended license, making an improper turn and not wearing a seat belt.

Dr. Segobiano Named New Columbia Superintendent

Dr. Gina Segobiano was hired last Thursday to be the new Superintendent of Columbia School District effective July 1, 2010. She will replace Ed Settles who is stepping down and moving back to his hometown Jerseyville. Dr. Segobiano has been the superintendent of Harmony Emge in Belleville the past seven years. “Dr. Segobiano brings a great deal of expertise to the district and she is extremely excited about this opportunity,” reports the school board.

 

The annual Columbia – Freeburg Holiday Boys’ Basketball Tournament begins Dec. 26. This year Columbia is the host team. Teams participating are Alton Marquette, Civic Memorial, Freeburg, Lebanon, Triad, Columbia, Murphysboro, Valmeyer, Waterloo and Gibault. The tournament runs through Wednesday, Dec. 30.

 

Waterloo VFW Post Commander Stephanie Kirksey has been named a National Aide-de-Camp to National VFW Commander-In-Chief Thomas Tradewell Sr. Kirksey was given the honorary title in recognition for her outstanding services to the Waterloo VFW Post.

 

January 4 will be a busy day at the Morrison Talbott Library in Waterloo. Events include a Tween Book Club Party, snowy time bed stories and Japan Travel Night. A Tween Book Club for children in grades sixth through eight is being formed at the Morrison-Talbott Library in Waterloo. A planning party will be held Jan. 14, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to kick off the club. Pizza and wings will be served by members of the Whiteside Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution, who are organizing the club, will serve pizza and wings. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by sending an email with your name to: waterlooteenbooks@gmail.com.The Whiteside Station Chapter will host their bedtime story hour. The winter season will be the theme. Attendees are asked to come in their pajamas and bring along snacks. Japan will be the theme of the travel night when Michaela Finnerty of Waterloo presents “Japan, Land of the Rising Sun” beginning at 7 p.m. She will describe her recent trip with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. In other library news, construction work continues in the basement of Morrison-Talbott Library. The library asks people to hold their donations for the book sale until after the New Year.

 

A judge at the Monroe County Courthouse granted a request Friday to delay a hearing made by attorneys for Sheri Coleman’s family regarding their request to add Joyce Meyer Ministries to a wrongful death civil lawsuit in connection with the murder of Sheri and her sons. The current civil lawsuit lists Chris Coleman, Sheri’s husband, as the defendant. The judge agreed to delay the hearing until February 2010.

 

There are a couple times available this holiday season to listen to the local rock band Aftershock. They will play a free Christmas dance on Saturday, Dec. 19 beginning at 8:30 p.m. They will rock in the New Year on Dec. 31 at the Smithton Turner Hall. Jeanette Gregson has been chosen the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Community Service Award winner. She will be officially recognized during the chamber’s annual meeting this January at Fire Side Inn. Gregson is employed as an advertising representative for the Monroe County Independent. She also is heavily involved with several area organizations.

Lyla Mae Dillenberger of Waterloo is the December winner of the Think Monroe County First Super Consumer drawing. She won a laundry storage tower valued at $300 from Sears in Waterloo. Dillenberger’s entry was drawn at Clark’s Country Oaks in Waterloo. January’s winner will receive a half-size gooey butter cake of the month for 20101 donated by Mokka Kaffeehaus in Columbia.


 

The Dirty River Band will rock in New Year’s Eve at Freeda’s in downtown Renault.

 

Folks are already busy planning the second annual Eaglefest to benefit the families of Sheri, Garett and Gavin Coleman. It will take place Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at The Falls in Columbia. The five local bands performing include Wayne Hundsdorfer's Midlife Crisis, Father Jack, Fountain Creek Band, a band of CHS students - Connor Brennan, Zach Simmons, Nick Reitz, Tyler Payton and Adam Unnerstall, and a St. Louis band that includes former Morland Drive members Kirstie Tilley and Blake Stumpf.

 

Recent Obituaries

Virgil Lee Clubbs, 64, of Columbia, died Dec. 16, 2009, at his residence. He was born Aug. 18, 1945, in Lilbourn, Mo. He was married Jessie (Markham) Clubbs in 1963 in St. Louis, Mo. In addition to his wife, Mr. Clubbs is survived by a daughter, Dawn Elizabeth (Ruskin) Golden of Gardner, Kan.; a son, Darin Michael (Jamie) Clubbs of Decatur; grandchildren Ruskin Michael Golden, Alexis Elizabeth Golden, Tyler Sabatian Clubbs and Jordan Maize Clubbs; siblings Leonard (Debbie) Clubbs of St. Louis, Mo., Shirley (Ed) Bracket of St. Louis, Mo., Billie (Joyce) Clubbs of Cahokia, James Clubbs of St. Louis, Mo., Virginia Falls of Cahokia and Jerry Clubbs of St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Oliver and Geraldine (nee Jaco) Clubbs; and a brother, Roger Clubbs. Mr. Clubbs attended the Southwest Church of the Nazarene in St. Louis for 40 years. For the past 20 years, he attended the First Church Of The Nazarene in Belleville. Mr. Clubbs was a retired manager at A.G. Edwards and Sons Inc. in St. Louis. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at 11 a.m., at the First Church of the Nazarene in Belleville with Pastor Craig Dillman officiating. Funeral arrangements were handled by Lawlor Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society for brain cancer research.

James W. Staedtler, 80, of Columbia died Dec. 20, 2009 in St. Louis. He was born Jan. 31, 1929, in St. Louis, the son of the late Harold and Edna (Sandman) Staedtler. In married Edna (Golterman) Staedtler on June 30, 1956. Besides his wife, Mr. Staedtler is survived by daughters Linda Phillips and Sandra Leeder; grandchildren Erica (Jeff) Range and Chris Phillips; and great-grandchildren Ezra and Enzo Range. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Tamara Phillips. Mr. Staedtler was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps. He was retired from Koken Manufacturing and was active with the American Kennel Club. Visitation is Wednesday, Dec. 23 from 11a.m. to 12 noon, at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. A funeral service will immediately follow with Pastor Steven Theiss officiating. Mr. Staedtler will be buried at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. 

Kenneth R. Hahs, 72, of Waterloo, died Dec. 16, 2009, in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Oct. 17, 1937 in St. Louis, the son of the late Farris Hahs and Ora (nee Turner) Dickemann. Mr. Hahs is survived by his wife, Jean (Lambert) Hahs; children Raymond (Lucy) Hahs and Rhonda (Darin) Ross; a grandson, Benjamin Hahs; and half-brothers Dan Dickemann and William Hahs; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Sonny" Hahs; and a sister, Fairalee Baity. Mr. Hahs was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waterloo, Sheet Metal Workers 36 and Retreads. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at First Baptist Church in Waterloo with Pastor Steve Neill officiating. Mr. Hahs was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to his church or to the American Heart Association.

Leona M. Roth, nee Prescher, 94, of Prairie du Rocher, died Dec. 18, 2009. She was born June 23, 1915 in Prairie du Rocher, the son of the late Edward and Christine (nee Schmitz) Prescher. Mrs. Roth is survived by her children Elaine (Conrad) Oxmann, Glenda (David) Baker and Don (Kathy) Roth; and grandchildren Nancy Oxmann, Karen Oxmann, Kathleen (David) Garden, Linda Oxmann, Julie (Chris) Seibold, Clint Baker, Jason Roth and Jeremy Roth; along with great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Roth; and a son, Allen E. Roth; along with sisters and brothers. Mrs. Roth was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Renault’s Ladies Aid. Memorials may be made to her church or KFUO radio station. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Renault with Pastor Ralph Laufer officiating. Mrs. Roth was buried at the church’s cemetery.

Nadine E. Osterhage, nee Loewe, 82, of Waterloo, died Dec. 16, 2009 in Red Bud. She was born Sept. 23, 1927 in Dupo, the daughter of the late Louis and Katherine (nee Reichert) Loewe. Mrs. Osterhage is survived by her children, Sandy Osterhage, Linda (Charles) Wallace, Randy Osterhage, Joy (Ronald) Hoffmann and Scott (Lorrie) Osterhage; grandchildren Grant Osterhage, Katherine Wallace and Amanda (William) Fuqua, Nicholas and Bethany Osterhage, Sarah (Karl) Krebel and Brian (Tara) Hoffmann, Amy (Jeff) Dunaway and Eric Osterhage; great-grandchildren Klair Krebel, Parker Dunaway, Brennen Hoffmann and Braydon and Landen Southerland; and a nephews, Al (Melinda) Studt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl H. Osterhage; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Warren and Ada Osterhage and Richard and Alice Studt. Mrs. Osterhage was a member St. Paul UCC of Waterloo, Eastern Star, Monroe County Farm Bureau, Kloepper clubs and a former 4-H leader. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC of Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. Mr. Osterhage was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to her church or to Oak Hill - Alzheimer's Unit.

Gladys Kraft, 91, of Waterloo, died Dec. 15, 2009 in Waterloo. She was born Jan. 4, 1918 in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Philip and Katie (nee Crook) Kraft. Mr. Kraft is survived by her nephews Charles (Rosalie) Metzger and Paul (Shirley) Huch; a niece, Janet (Dennie) Rippelmeyer) and a brother-in-law, Carl Huch. She was preceded in death by sisters Marie Huch and Elvira C. Metzger; nephews Louis and Edward Metzger; and a brother-in-law, Oliver Metzger. Mrs. Kraft was a member of the St. Paul UCC Ladies Guild and belonged to the same sewing circle for more than 60 years. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC of Waterloo with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating. Mrs. Kraft was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to her church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

David Mike Hayes, 47, of Waterloo, died Dec. 20, 2009 in Waterloo. He was born June 6, 1962 in Salem. Mr. Hayes is survived by his mother, Linda (Beadleston) Branson; a sister, Carla Rick; brothers Thomas (Colleen) Hayes and Gregory Hayes; an aunt, Carolyn (Jerry) Holsapple, uncle, Ken Krauss; and nieces and nephews Susan and Todd Rick, Jackie and Luke Hayes and Rachel and Alyssa Hayes; along with cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Tommy Hayes; step-father Keith Branson, and an aunt, Nancy Krauss; along with his grandparents. Mr. Hayes was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Carpenter’s Local 1997. Visitation is Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating. Mr. Hayes will be buried at a later day at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to Jefferson Barracks.
