Weekend Wrap-Up - January 3, 2010

 

The Waterloo boys’ and Gibault girls’ bowling teams took top honors Saturday at the first-ever Monroe County Bowling Cup Challenge. High school teams from Waterloo, Columbia and Gibault matched up for the competition held at Westpark Bowl. The scores for the boys’ games were Waterloo (6,172), Columbia (6,150) and Gibault (5,793). On the girls’ side, the scores were Gibault (4,851), Columbia (4,850) and Waterloo (3,990).

Carrie Shaw of Columbia died early Sunday morning from a gunshot wound while in a car in the Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis, reports Fox 2 News of St. Louis. Shaw, 40, lived in the 2800 block of Lakeside Drive on the north end of Columbia. Shaw died just after 3 a.m. as a result of several gunshot wounds while she was in a car parked on an on-ramp onto I-55 in the city of St. Louis. The St. Louis Police Department reports it is believed the incident occurred shortly after Shaw possibly purchased drugs. Shaw was rushed to an area hospital but was soon pronounced dead.

 

John “Sonny” Lenhardt celebrated his birthday Saturday with a gathering of family and friends at Freeda’s Bar in Renault. Attendee’s enjoyed playing kloepper, eating fried fish and downing a few cold beverages.

 

Recent Obituaries

Bernard C. Wuertz, 69, of Red Bud, formerly of Valmeyer, died Jan. 2, 2010 in Red Bud. She was born Aug. 31, 1940 in Harrisonville, the son of the late Frank and Lillian (nee Keepes) Wuertz. Mr. Wuertz is survived by his wife, Eileen (nee Fusch) Wuertz; sons Carol (Denise) Wuertz and David (Sarah) Wuertz; grandchildren Will, Emma, Matthew and Audrey Wuertz; sisters Marilyn Schuttenhelm and Carol Roy; brothers Donald (Judith) Wuertz and Tom (Linda) Wuertz; sisters-in-law Jeannie Wuertz and Mary Ann Naimey; brother-in-law, David Ahrens; and uncle, Jacob Keepes; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers James and William Wuertz; a sister, Rose Ahrens; brothers-in-law Don Schuttenhelm and Earl "Buck" Roy; and nephews John and Scott Wuertz. Mr. Wuertz was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ruma and the Illinois - Mississippi Valley Gun Club. Visitation is Monday, Jan. 4, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ruma with Father Clyde Grogan officiating. Mr. Wuertz will be buried at Immaculate Conception Church in Madonnaville. Memorials may be made to his church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
