Weekend Wrap-Up - January 24, 2010
Gregson Honored For Lifetime Of Service To Community Jeanette Gregson was the guest of honor Saturday night during the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting at Fireside Inn. She was the recipient of the 2009 Community Service Award for her lifetime of dedication to serving the community. Gregson began her career the newspaper industry in 1946 at the Waterloo Republican. In 1954 she joined the staff of the Waterloo Times and switched to the Monroe County Clarion in 1979. Gregson has been working at The Monroe County Independent since 2006. She has also been very involved with several local organizations, especially the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce where she has served numerous roles. Most recently, this past summer she was the Grand Marshal of the Porta Westfalica Parade.
Also during
the meeting, Connie Lambeck was named the chamber’s VIP of the Year for the
third year in a row. The award is presented annually to the individual who signs
up the most new members. Other highlights included Connie Vogt winning both the
50/50 drawing and Muny tickets presented by guest speakers Harry Hamm.
Falcons Take
Third In Diocesan Tournament:
The SS. Peter and Paul Grade School boys’ basketball team ended their season
today on a high note. They defeated All Saints of Breese 48-29 to take home the
third place trophy in the Belleville Diocesan Tournament played at Gibault High
School’s gym.
Gibault defeated Freeburg 55-49 Saturday afternoon to win seventh place in the Nashville Invitational Tournament. Central won the tourney with a 44-29 victory over Nashville.
Eagles Take Third In Sparta Tourney: DuQuoin defeated Sparta on Saturday in the championship of the Sparta Mid-Winter Classic by a score of 57-45. Columbia took third place with a win over Red Bud 55-48. Lebanon took fifth place with a 68-44 win over Waterloo. Rounding out the results was Trico over Steelville 71-55.
Rickert Named Top Speech Coach: Waterloo High School speech coach John Rickert was named the area’s Speech Coach of the Year.
The Hecker
Fire Department held their annual trivia night
Saturday at the Hecker Community Center. They are now gearing up for the
Backstoppers Trivia Night to be held March 6, also to be held at the Hecker
Community Center.
CHS Cheerleaders Win Another Trophy
The Columbia
High School cheerleading squad took home the first place trophy this weekend in
the Mount Vernon Invitational.
