Waterloo
Comes From Behind For Victory Over Highland:
Although they trailed by 12 at
halftime Friday night, the Waterloo Bulldogs boys’ basketball team never stopped
battling against Highland. The Bulldogs outscored Highland 23-13 in the fourth
quarter to pull off a come from behind victory. Jake Degener hit the game winner
with .7 seconds remaining on the clock to seal the comeback. Degener led the
Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points.
Columbia
Beats Carlyle At Home:
The
Columbia Eagles breezed past the Carlyle basketball team Friday night with a
56-38 victory. The Eagles were led by Wilson Babb’s 20 points.
In other boys’ varsity basketball action… Gibault lost to Mascoutah 45-34, Red Bud beat Okawville 61-43 and Valmeyer lost at Dupo 75-54.
The Monroe County Regional Alzheimer's Conference will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Hope Christian Church off of Route 3 between Waterloo and Columbia. The event is sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association and Oak Hill. Dr. Amy Rohlfing will discuss "Medications and Dementia," Pat Felix, RN, will speak on "The Alzheimer's Disease Process and Implications of the Disease," and Rachel Lugge from the Alzheimer's Association will speak on "Understanding Behaviors and Improving Communication." Refreshments will be served. Pre-registration is required by calling 800-272-3900. This meeting will take the place of the February Alzheimer's Association’s In the Moment support group at Oak Hill.
Two Break-ins Reported In Downtown Valmeyer: The Valmeyer Police Department is reporting one home in new town Valmeyer was broken into on Wednesday and a neighboring home showed signs of an attempted forced entry likely on the same day. The homeowner whose house the burglar entered reports missing items of clothing. Police Chief Tom Andres said they are investigating the incidents, but at this point have no suspects. Andres reminds all residents to lock their doors and report anyone suspicious in their neighborhoods.
Recent Obituary Lucille C. Glessner, nee Metzger, 90, of Waterloo, died Feb. 12, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born Sept. 5, 1919 in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Louis and Alice (nee Mentel) Metzger. Mrs. Glessner is survived by her children, Mary Waterman, Michael (Wanda) Glessner and James (Ursula) Glessner; grandchildren Steve Waterman, Laura (Chris) Hillbrand, Jeanna (Kent) Ruehter, Sarah (Matt) Ulrich, Christine (Brian) Bise, Robert (Kim) Glessner, Susan (Mark) Bonk, and Thomas and Joseph Glessner; great-grandsons Chance Hillbrand, Coy Ruether, Leo Hillbrand, Owen Ulrich, Brayden and Noah Bise, Alex Glessner and Lucas Bonk; and a sister-in-law, Cathleen Glessner; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Glessner; and great-grandson, Michael Bise. Mrs. Glessner was a homemaker who was an active member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where she participated in the Mary and Martha Society and other church projects. She volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Bank for 50 years. Lucille also enjoyed quilting, playing the piano and organ, dancing, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation is Sunday, Feb. 14, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m., at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. Mrs. Glessner will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church, SPPS Grade School or Western Egyptian.

Fire Destroys Home On Trout Camp Road The home at 2430 Trout Camp Road in rural Waterloo was completely destroyed by fire this morning. A neighbor spotted flames shooting through the roof of the home at about 7 a.m. and dialed 911. Waterloo firefighters soon arrived and began battling the fully engulfed structure. There were no cars in the garage and it was soon learned that no one was inside at the time. Firefighters from Valmeyer and Columbia also arrived on the scene to assist. The initial report is that the home is owned by a Rosalba Cirami and Kevin Bacon, with one or both working for a fire department in St. Louis. They were not home at the time of the fire. According to a neighbor, Bacon is a part-owner of the Phoenix Bar in South County. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. ![]()
