Father Of Columbia Resident Dies In Plane Crash

The father of Rick Clarkson of Columbia was one of the men who died Sunday evening when a plane crashed into a home in rural Belleville. Robert “Rob-O” Clarkson was in the plane being piloted by his good friend, Don Estell, an investment banker. Robert Clarkson lived in Swansea and owned Industrial Gas Products of Sauget. The two were both veteran pilots who were instrument-certified, reports a family member. They made annual flying excursions to Florida to get their re-certifications.

Rick Clarkson informed the staff at the family business this morning about the death of his father. Rick and his wife, Debbie (Shinn), thank everyone for their prayers as they deal with the loss. The FAA has begun an investigation into the specifics of the cause of the crash. Funeral arrangements are pending for both Clarkson and Estell.
