Weekend Wrap-Up - March 21, 2010
Eagles Split Double Header Against Southwestern Piasa
To start off
their season, the Columbia Eagles and Southwestern Piasa split wins of a double
header Saturday at Columbia. The scores were 5-4 at each game. In the first
game, CHS’s Drew Weisenborn took the loss – giving up three runs in three
innings, striking out five and walking no one. Kyle Breitenstein picked up the
win for the Eagles in the nightcap, pitching two scoreless innings.
In other Saturday sports action… In a slugfest, the Gibault Hawks lost to Roxana 15-10. Chris Kuester took the loss as he gave up nine runs in three innings pitched. The Valmeyer boys’ baseball team got off to a good start with a 10-6 victory over Carlyle. Kyle Kipping went 3-4 with two RBIs. The Gibault girls’ soccer team fell to Wesclin by a score of 2-1. The Waterloo girls’ soccer team traveled to Mascoutah and came away with a 5-1 conference win.
Valmeyer Music Boosters Raise Funds With Annual Dinner Theater
The Valmeyer High School multi-purpose room was filled to near-capacity Saturday
evening, March 19, for the annual Valmeyer Music Boosters Dinner Theater.
Inducted into the Valmeyer Music Hall of Fame during the evening were Angela
Gilbert Crawford, Dave Henerfauth and Leslie Hoffmann.
Josh Phelps of Waterloo is happy to be back home recovering from injuries sustained Friday evening in a two-vehicle accident on Route 3 on the north end of Waterloo.
Kurt Reitz of Waterloo was among the 71 Thompson Coburn attorneys who have been named to the 2010 edition of Best Lawyers in America, the oldest peer-review publication in the legal profession. Reitz specializes in railroad law.
Happy birthday to Matt Dechau who turns 26 on Monday, March 22, while Yvonne Brandt turns 50 on Tuesday, March 23.
Myrtle Ann (nee Sondag) Frierdich celebrated her 75th birthday March 14 with her family, including her brother and sister-in-law, David and Carol Sondag; niece, Stacy Sondag; and nephew Curt (Ericha) Sondag. The evening began with dinner at The Lantern Restaurant in downtown proceeded by cake and other deserts at Curt and Ericha’s house. Myrtle Ann was very surprised to receive a basket full of goodies, including two bottles of wine, peanuts, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and crossword puzzle books. The highlight of her evening was playing Guitar Hero with nephew Curt. Myrtle Ann said she will never forget the fun evening with her family.
Open House At Columbia’s Shoemaker House: The Columbia Heritage and Preservation Commission will hold a public hearing on Monday, March 22, from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Shoemaker Schoolhouse, located near the intersection of Gall Rd. and Route 3 in Columbia. The purpose of this hearing will be to review an application for nomination of this property as a Columbia Historical Landmark. The public hearing will be conducted in an open house format, with members of the public invited to attend at any time during the hours stated above to share comments regarding the schoolhouse, its historic significance, and/or memories of its occupants. The Heritage and Preservation Commission will then convene to consider the nomination and public hearing comments at their regular meeting, which will convene at 7:30 p.m. that same evening in Columbia City Hall. Vernon Ritter heads up the Heritage and Preservation Commission. Former students and teachers from Shoe-maker School, their kids and grandkids, and other interested community members are invited to drop in to see the building prior to its renovation this spring into the Monroe County Welcome Center (the area's premier tourism center). Recent Obituaries Ronald Rehmer, 78, of Waterloo, died March 19, 2010 in new Hanover. He was born Dec. 30, 1931 in Columbia, the son of the late Albert and Ardel (nee Beckmann) Rehmer. Mr. Rehmer is survived by his wife, Maretta (nee Davis) Rehmer; children Randy (LeAnn Alexander) Rehmer, Kevin (Janet Weber) Rehmer and Rhonda Rehmer Barnes; grandchildren Jesse Rehmer, Jenna Rehmer, Zachary Barnes, Ray and Jennie Frame, Nicole Range, Stacey Dalton and Tracey (Pat) Ahrens; great-grandchildren Blake Frame and Alissa Wisely; sister, Anola (Roy) Henke; brother, Norman (Pat) Rehmer; brother-in-law, Leroy Davis; and sister-in-law, Lee Sullivan; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Rehmer was a veteran of the U.S. Army, served on the consistory at Zoar UCC, was a member of octet, the Kaskaskia Trail Chorus and the Columbia American Legion. Ronald was a carpenter, who had previously worked at Town and Country Auto Supply in Waterloo and was the former owner of Rehmer Hatchery in New Hanover. He was a life-long musician and woodworker. Visitation is Monday, March 22, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, March 23, at 10 a.m. at Zoar UCC in New Hanover with Pastor Carol Tag officiating. Memorials may be made to his church. Carol L. Reinheimer, 67, of Columbia, died March 21, 2010, of ovarian cancer. She was born Aug. 11, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Joseph and Cornelia (Wander) Rard. She married Donald C. Reinheimer in 1982 in Columbia In addition to her husband, Mrs. Reinheimer is survived by her children, Larry (Vielka) Ahrens of Edwardsville, Melanie (Don) Harris of O'Fallon, Joseph Ahrens of Killeen, Tex, Anne (Joseph) Michalski of O'Fallon, Charles Minton of Belleville, Margaret Martino of Trenton and Eileen (Terry) Terschluse of Washington, Mo.; a brother, Joseph (Deborah) Rard of Livermore, Calif.; sister, Kathleen Lastarria (Breandon Isom) of Ballwin, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, two nieces; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters in infancy, Susan and Beth; and a brother, Paul Rard. Carol was a nurse for 40 years, had a lifelong commitment to social justice and a foster parent for more than 20 years. She also was a pen pal to women in the penal system through the Soaring Spirits Ministry. Carol enjoyed traveling, including trip to visit family and friends in California, Memphis, New Orleans, Branson, Kansas City, Chicago, England, Poland, Switzerland, Scotland, Greece and Australia. She loved gardening, quilting, crossword puzzles, bingo, bargain shopping, family history, telling stories, planning family reunions, her cat and ice cream. Visitation is Wednesday, March 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Thursday, March 25, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Mrs. Reinheimer will be buried at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Society, Hospice of Southern Illinois, the ICS Education Fund or any ministry in pursuit of social justice. |
