Helicopter Used To Clear Debris Away From Power Lines
Residents
living along the Ameren/IP electric lines between Waterloo and Valmeyer have
noticed a low-flying helicopter hovering just above the tree tops. Hanging
from the helicopter is a unique-looking apparatus with 10 saw blades
attached. That piece of equipment is being used to trim the trees and other
unwanted vegetation which has grown close to the power lines.
Sports Update: Since the weather is now actually feeling like Spring, the sports schedule is starting to heat up. On tap for Waterloo today beginning at 4 p.m. includes; varsity track at Columbia, varsity softball at Edwardsville, boys tennis at Civic Memorial the girls soccer team hosts Civic Memorial. Columbia girls varsity soccer plays at Hazelwood, 3:30 p.m., the track team hosts Waterloo at 4, girls Varsity softball plays Belleville West, and the boys varsity baseball team plays O’Fallon. The Gibault girls’ soccer team hosts Notre Dame at 4 p.m., the track team plays at Sparta, girls varsity softball is at Civic Memorial and the boys varsity baseball host Sparta. Valmeyer softball and baseball squads travel to Okawville for games that begin at 4:30 p.m.
The Columbia Lady Eagles girls’ soccer team defeated Hazelwood Central 2-0 Monday in first round action of the Hazelwood Classic Tournament. Scoring goals for the Eagles were Hannah Varel and Erin Weaver. CHS goal Diana Mantia had five saves in the victory.
Census Representative At Courthouse: Through April 19, a representative from the United States Census Bureau will be available to address questions regarding the census at the Monroe County Courthouse in Waterloo. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the main floor near the mapping and platting office.
The Monroe and Randolph County Parents Support Group for parents of special needs students will meet on March 25, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Waterloo High School, room D118.

Recent Obituaries
Orval F. “Bud” Vogt, 79, of Waterloo, died March 21, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 26, 1930 in Waterloo, the son of the late Leo and Selma (ne Rehmer) Vogt. Mr. Vogt is survived by his wife, Geraldine (nee Hess) Vogt; children, Diane (Tom) Sendelbeck, Carol Vogt, Bonnie Vogt, Allen (Karen) Vogt, Brian (Cindy) Vogt and Linette (James) Hermanns; grandchildren Emily Green, Kelly Sendelbeck, Ashley Webb, Lauren Sendelbeck, Megan Vogt and Elayna Hermanns; great-grandson, Cameron Gillen; and a brother, Leland Vogt; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Herman Hess; mother-in-law, Florence Hess; grandson, J. P. LaCasse; a sister, Mary Ellen Kern; brothers-in-law Simon Kern and Robert Gregson; a sister-in-law, Corina Vogt; nephew, Paul Vogt; and niece, Vickie Gregson. Mr. Vogt was a veteran of the Korean War and a lifetime member of Waterloo’s Metzger Crook VFW Post 6504. He attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo and was a member of Carpenters Local 33. Visitation is Thursday, March 25, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Friday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at the SPPS Church with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. Mr. Vogt will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church, its school or masses. Anthony J. Kruse, 91, of Waterloo, died March 21, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Oct. 3, 1918, in St. Charles, Mo., the son of the late Bernard and Emma (Redinger) Kruse. Mr. Kruse is survived by his son, Dennis (Denise) Kruse; grandchildren Dawn (Ryan) Grohman and Dana (Gerred) Carothers; great-grandchildren Ashley, Aaron, Ande and Abby Grohman, and Whitley, Payton and Kelsey Carothers; and a sister, Margaret Friedhoff; along with sister-in-laws, brothers-in-law, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine (nee Brewer) Kruse (nee Brewer); a daughter, Patricia Kruse; brothers Barney, Al, Charlie, Eugene and Joe Kruse; and sisters Mary, Francis, Gertrude, Dorothy and Louise. Mr. Kruse was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards. Graveside service was Tuesday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo with Father Stan Konieczny presiding. Memorials may be made to the Waterloo Senior Center. Bertha M. Waite (nee Martin), 99, of Waterloo, died March 23, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born May 26, 1910 in Bladen, Ohio, the daughter of the late Emery and Minnie (nee Lewis) Martin. Mrs. Waite is survived by her children Elva E. Cull, Norma J. “Gene” Boyd, Joanne Kuhn, Jane (Tony) Meglio, John (Alison) Waite and Charles A. (Cheri) Waite; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil A. Waite; two brothers; and two sisters. Mrs. Waite was a homemaker and worked at Valley Department Store in Vicksburg, Miss., where she lived for many years. She was an active member of the Eastern Star Chapter and Hawkins Methodist Church. Visitation is Thursday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral will follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Steve Neill presiding. Mr. Waite will be buried Friday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m. at Liberty Cemetery in Pulaski. Memorials may be made to Oak Hill in Waterloo.
