Weekend Sports Wrap-Up

The Columbia Lady Eagles soccer team (14-4-3)  defeated Freeburg (13-8) on Friday by a score of 2-0 in the Class 1A Quincy Notre Dame Sectional. The Lady Eagles will next play Tuesday against the winner of the Quincy-Notre Dame (20-2) versus Alton-Marquette (12-10) game. In the clash of the local softball powerhouses, Gibault (25-5) defeated Columbia (26-7) by a score of 3-1 on Saturday in the championship game of the Columbia 2A Regional. Gibault ace pitcher Emily Morris picked up another complete-game victory. On the baseball diamond, Columbia (12-14) will play Freeburg (11-23) for the Red Bud Regional Title on Monday at 4 p.m.

The Valmeyer High School baseball team fell to Lebanon (15-14) on Saturday by a score of 8-3 in the championship game of the Class 1A Dupo Regional. The Pirates were leading 3-1 until the sixth inning when the Greyhounds scored seven to put the game away. The Pirates finished the season with a record of 11-14.

Waterloo Falls To Althoff In Regional Championship

Undefeated Althoff (22-0), continued their perfect season with strong play Friday against Waterloo in the championship game of the Mascoutah Regional. They defeated the Bulldogs 7-3. WHS ended their season with a record of 16-6-1.

The Mon-Clair Baseball League begins play Sunday, May 23. Of note, is Vern Moehrs who will begin his 50th year as the manager of the Waterloo Millers. In the opening weekend for the local teams, the Millers will host the Columbia Saints, Denny “Boog” Pieper and the Valmeyer Lakers head to Belleville to play the Rockies and the Fairview Heights Red Birds travel to Millstadt. All games are double-headers beginning at 1:30 p.m.

 

Waterloo High School tennis stars Wils Hawn and Adam Borgschulte have qualified for the doubles-semifinals of the Belleville West Sectioanl Tournament.

 

Recent Obituaries

Alsace C. Muskopf, nee Wachtel, 77, of Hecker, died May 21, 2010 in Des Peres, Mo. She was born May 15, 1933 in Hecker, the daughter of the late Peter and Rosamond (nee Ganley) Wachtel. Mrs. Muskopf is survived by her children, Gloria (Richard) Harms, Sheila (Kelly) Litton and Pam (Scott) Voll; grandchildren Keith Harms, Jeremy Harms, Lisa Champ, Chad Litton and Jeff Litton; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Harms; and a brother, Leroy Wachtel; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband George D. Muskopf; daughter, Marsha Muskopf; and sisters Edna Haudrich, Mildred Eagles and Irma Newton. Mrs. Muskopf was a member of St. Augustine Church’s Altar Sodality and the Hecker Community Center. Visitation is Sunday, May 23, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, May 24, at 10 a.m., at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hecker with Father Don Eichenseer officiating. Mrs. Muskopf will be buried at her church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church or to the American Lung Association.

 

 Melissa Fausz of Waterloo is the May winner of the Think Monroe County First’s Super Consumer drawing. Fausz has won a $100 gift certificate to Clark's Country Oaks in Waterloo. Her entry was drawn at Chuck Pittman’s State Farm office in Waterloo. June’s winner will receive a $150 gift certificate for an in-home interior design consultation from Final Touch in downtown Columbia.
