Derek Hornbostel  of Columbia received minor injuries in a rollover accident this morning at 7:30 a.m. in Waterloo along Route 3 near the intersection with North Market Street. He was driving a Chevy 2500 pickup when he apparently lost control causing the vehicle to overturn near the entrance to Schnuck’s. Hornbostel, 16, was transported to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis for non-life-threatening injuries.

 

Dustin Brinkman’s Hey Buddy Wins County Fair’s Rooster Crowing Contest

Hey Buddy the rooster crowed 60 times in 30 minutes to take home the first place trophy in the annual Monroe County Fair Rooster Crowing Contest. “I had a hard time keeping up with all the clucks and crows,” said Brian “Boomer” Garleb, one of the contest judges. “I guess the rooster was amazed by my red Gateway FS hat.” Hey Buddy is owned by Dustin Brinkman, the son of Bruce and Rita Brinkman of Valmeyer.

Figure 8 Race Highlights Wednesday Night At The Fair

The always-popular Figure 8 Race begins is at 7:30 p.m. in the main arena of the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Admission is $10. Information other upcoming fair events is located on the website: http://www.monroecounty-fair.org.

Recent Obituary

Leroy Scharf, 84, of Millstadt, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. He was born April 4, 1926, the son of the late Alfred and Henrietta (Haas) Scharf. Mr. Scharf is survived by his wife, Wanda (Doris) Scharf, nee Procasky; children Gary (Judy) Scharf, Larry Scharf, Sandy (Bruce) Siddle and Darrell Scharf; grandchildren Amber (Jon) Weems, Jonathan (Jackie) Siddle, Kevin (Becky) Siddle, Eric Scharf and Dustin Scharf; and a great-grandchild, Dallas Siddle. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie, in 1952. Leroy worked at Imbs Milling Co. for 23 years and also was an employee at Golden Dipt. He was also a lifelong farmer who was a member of the St. Clair County Farm Bureau. Leroy was also an avid gardener and fisherman. Visitation is Wednesday, July 28, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral is Thursday, July 29, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. David Krueger officiating. Mr. Scharf will be buried Concordia United Church of Christ Cemetery in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Concordia Church.
