Waterloo Student Named National FFA Finalist

Waterloo High School student Andy Schaefer has been selected as a finalist for the FFA Proficiency Award in Agricultural Mechanics Design and Fabrication - Entrepreneurship/Placement. Schaefer is one of four FFA students competing for this award at the finals to be held this October during the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. Schaefer became eligible for the national award after winning the Illinois State FFA competition earlier this year.

Jason Blanchard of rural Waterloo avoided injury after his truck collided with tree during an accident early Saturday morning along Route 156, just east of Waterloo. According to the police report, Blanchard, 31, was driving his 2005 Chevy Silverado eastbound on Route 156 towards his home on Goeddeltown Road when he apparently lost control at 12:55 a.m. trying to avoid hitting a deer. The truck went off the roadway at Hartman’s Curve, sideswiped a tree and then traveled down a hill and into a field. The vehicle sustained extensive front-end damage but Blanchard declined medical treatment that evening.
