Waterloo’s Running Game Powers Team To Victory Over Freeburg

Waterloo High School won their first game of the season as they headed to Freeburg and brought home a 37-10 victory. Running back Zack Laidley powered the ball into the end zone twice in the first half on runs of five yards and the one-yard line. Half-back Dalton Kaufman also scored twice – first on a 30-yard run and then on a 60-yard intersection return. Shelby Culpepper also had a great game carrying the ball. His night was capped up in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard touchdown run. Wide receiver / place kicker Aaron Aycock also put points on the board with a 40-yard field goal, along with four tallies on extra-point kicks.

The bad news from the game is that the Bulldogs’ Zach Dhom broke his ankle and was wheeled off the field on a stretcher and sent to an area hospital. Dr. Michael Kirk said Dhom was a real trooper and toughed through the pain despite the severity of the injury. Waterloo is now gearing up for their home-opener next Friday, Sept. 3, when they take on their county-rival, the Columbia Eagles. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.

Columbia headed to Sparta and edged out a 7-6 victory. Sparta scored first, with a 77 yard touchdown run four minutes into the game. After the extra-point attempt, the Eagles were down 6-0. But the boys from Columbia picked themselves up and went to work. With four minutes left in the first quarter, Eagles’ starting quarterback, junior Alex Schlemmer, ran the ball into the end zone from 11 yards out. Placekicker Blake Byrd followed with a field goal to put the extra point through the uprights. The first quarter ended with the Eagles up 7-6, and that was all the scoring for the remainder of the game. Both teams’ defenses held offenses in check, with teams spending the rest of the three quarters exchanging punts.

In his first game as the opening day starting quarterback, Schlemmer went 17-36 with 184 yards in the passing game. Charles Farris lead the Eagles running game with 81 yards on 11 carries. Brendan Schumacher was the top receiving with 64 yards on three receptions. On the defensive side, Robby Likens had four tackles, including a quarterback sack.

The Eagles head to Waterloo next Friday.
