Sump Pump Malfunction Causes Minor Fire At Columbia Firefighter’s Home

When T.J. Weik hears the Columbia fire alarm going off, he is used to rushing to his truck, heading to the CVFD fire house and helping someone in the community in need of a firefighter. Well, last Saturday, Nov. 13, Weik was the one in need of assistance from the CVFD. Weik, who lives along Briegel Street, heard his smoke detectors going off as smoke began filling up his basement.

With the help of fellow firefighters, Weik soon discovered the smoke was coming from the sump pump in a corner of his basement. Power was soon shut off to the machine to end the problem. Firefighters then set up a couple fans in his basement to help remove the smoke from his home.

There was no fire damage; Weik just kept his windows open to freshen the air in his home and he headed out to shop for a new sump pump.
