The initial report is that Monroe County was spared from much of the damage from today’s severe thunderstorm which barreled through the St. Louis Metropolitan area just before 12 noon. There were reports of residents seeing funnel clouds in the sky over Waterloo, but it is believed a tornado did not touch down in the area. There were several reports of fallen trees and signs within the county. The closest major damage is possibly several power lines which were snapped in half along Route 163 north of Millstadt. Portions of St. Louis County, including Sunset Hills, were hit very hard with several structures receiving heavy damage and leveling numerous homes and businesses.

SPPS Finishes Second In Their School’s Holiday Basketball Tournament

Although the SS. Peter and Paul Grade School boys’ basketball team was seeded sixth in their school’s annual SPPS Holiday Tournament, the boys pulled it together at the right time as they won the second place trophy in the championship game on Dec. 30. The Falcons have had a tough season so far, having graduated last year’s stars Wes Degener and Nick Row. But during this tournament, they played as a solid team and worked their way into the championship game against St. John Newman. The Falcons played a tough game, but lost by eight points. SPPS players Ryan Aycock and Andrew Reinholz were named to the All-Tournament team. The Falcons are coached by Vern Tepen and Ron Hurst.

Columbia High School Principal Mark Stuart is happy to report that his minivan has been recovered. The 2001 Chrysler Town and Country was stolen while it was parked Tuesday at the Freeburg High School parking lot. At the time of the theft, Stuart was inside the gym watching the CHS boys’ basketball team beat Alton-Marquette during the Freeburg-Columbia Holiday Tournament. Stuart said the vehicle was recovered the next day in East St. Louis with damage to the lock and steering column, as well as a leather jacket being taken by the burglars. It is suspected that Stuart’s vehicle was used as a get-away car following several reports of break-ins throughout Freeburg earlier on Tuesday.

Butch Phillips and his son Tim, both of Waterloo, are reported to be doing as best as can be expected and continue to recover at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. They were involved in an accident Wednesday morning when their truck collided with a semi-tractor truck in Darmstadt, Ind. Butch had successful surgery today to make repairs to his hip and femur. Tim has a badly injured nose and is listed in stable condition.  Tim’s son Eric said the Grandpa Butch and his father Tim are not out of the woods yet, but things are looking promising for their full recovery.

The Waterloo VFW will be closed this evening, Friday, Dec. 31, in honor of New Year’s Eve.
