Fair’s Queen And Little Miss Candidates Announced The Monroe County Fair Board has announced the official line up of this year’s candidates for Fair Queen and Little Miss. There are five young ladies vying for the title of 2012 Monroe County Fair Queen - Bethany Ann Klein, Lauren Elizabeth Marquardt, Jana Steibel, Maggi Rippelmeyer and Brooke Lenhardt. There are 10 little grade school gals hoping to become the next Little Miss - Caroline Joy Geringer, Chloe Schilling, Olivia Stechmesser, Molly Grohmann, Olivia Roessler, Jada Jean Voelker, Emma Day, Madison Nicole Schneider, Gabriella “Gabby” Meier and Haley Rednour. This year’s fair takes place July 22-29, with the Queen and Little Miss Pageant taking place Sunday, July 22.

VHS Wins Top State Award The Valmeyer High School FFA won first place Thursday, June 14 in the State Parliamentary Procedure Competition held today as part of the annual State FFA Convention in Springfield.
Comedy “Dearly Beloved” Set To Take MASC Stage The Monroe Actors Stage Company will present the classic comedy "Dearly Beloved" on Friday, Saturday, Sunday June 15-17 and 22-24. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., while the Sunday performances are at 2:30 p.m., at downtown Waterloo’s historic Capitol Theatre. Dearly Beloved was written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, all of whom were part of the creative team for television show "The Golden Girls." The story takes place in Fayro, Tex., where a wedding is being planned. The mother, Frankie Dubberly, played by Terry Paeltz, is putting together an antebellum-style extravaganza. While the bride, Tina Jo, played by Kaitlyn Wirth, wants nothing to do with her mother's grandiose plans... and hilarity ensues. Other cast members include Doylene Daniels as Geneva, Rachel Feazel as Twink, Janet Vise as Nelda, Sam Baker as Wiley, Becky Krueger as Honey Raye, David Zimmermann as Dub Dubberly, Dan Irwin as John Curtis, Chris Ceradsky as Justin, and Jennifer Ceradsky as Patsy Price. The show is directed by John Campbell and Tim Paeltz is the assistant director. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens and students. Monroe Actors Studio Company is holding open auditions for the Richard Rodgers musical, "Two By Two" on Sunday, June 17 and Monday, June 18. They will be held at 7 p.m. at Waterloo¹s Capitol Theatre. The show is the story of Noah and his family. The 1970s Broadway production starred comedian Danny Kaye. The MASC adaptation uses a cast of four men and four women of various ages. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and also a 16-32 measure passage from a song of the actor's choice. Those auditioning should bring their own music. "Two By Two" will be directed by Kathy Campbell, while Marcia Braswell will handle the music direction. Performances of the show will be this September. Congressional Candidate Jason Plummer Makes Campaign Stop At County Courthouse Jason Plummer, the Republican candidate U.S. Rep. in Illinois' 12th Congressional District, continued his town hall forum tour and made a stop Thursday evening at the Monroe County Courthouse in Waterloo. Plummer fielded questions and discussed subjects ranging from taxes, cutting government spending, energy and agriculture. One of the items he stressed was the need for the government to allow Illinois to mine more of its coal. "Southern Illinois is blessed with an abundance of natural resources particularly coal and the EPA is in the way of job creation. Coal is needed to help feed the power grid of this country," said Plummer.
Recent Obituary Nelson Arthur Wolf, 76, of Waterloo, died June 14, 2012 in Waterloo. He was born Dec. 21, 1935 in East St. Louis, the son of the late Arthur and Mae Georgia (nee Nielson) Wolf. Mr. Wolf is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (nee Stahlschmidt) Wolf; his children Cheryl Wolf, Deborah (Warren) Benning and Alan (Debbie) Wolf; step-children Dawn (Ken Kornfeind) Bense and Jason Bense; grandchildren Aaron, Lydia and Miriam Wolf and Conner and Leah Benning; step-grandchild Payton Kornfeind; a sister, Arlene Mathis; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Joseph (Jane) Stahlschmidt, Ellen (Walter) Williams, Robert (Cheryl) Stahlschmidt and Betty (Ken) Bailey; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and his fishing buddies. He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Barbara Patterson. Mr. Wolf was of the Lutheran faith. He was an avid fisherman who was a mail carrier for 17 years and was a employed for 18 years at the St. Louis Postal Data Center. Visitation is Sunday, June 17, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, June 18, at 1 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo with Pastor Tony Troup officiating. Mr. Wolf will be buried at the Kolmer Memorial Cemetery.
